Upright leaves are strongly associated with down right roots. Hybrids with upright leaves have a higher tendency to lodge because of two factors: weak vertical roots and thicker plant populations.

Root lodging resistance results from wider, horizontal roots, while yield results from narrower, more vertical roots reaching subsoil moisture.
