Ear types are defined as fixed, flex, or something in between.
A hybrid with a fixed ear size means it makes the same size ear
regardless of plant populations, while a hybrid designated as a
flex type hybrid makes either longer and/or girthier ears when
plant populations are decreased. A flex ear hybrid is desirable
where plant populations below the desired level. A fixed ear hybrid
would be desirable when planted at their optimal plant population
on highly productive soils. Fixed ear hybrids, with their tolerance
to high plant populations, tend to be the highest yielding. Most
fixed ear hybrids tend to be shorter statured. Thus, when planting
them thicker, they will usually grow taller.
