The differences between Monsanto’s
YieldGard Plus and YieldGard VT3 centers
around the method by which the gene has
been inserted. The YieldGard RW/CB was
inserted via the Gene Gun method while
YieldGard VT3 was inserted via the Agrobacterium
Transformation, a method that
consists of a bacterium, called Agrobacterium
tumefaciens, or a related strain, that
transfers the desired genes into the cells of
the host plant.
This method of gene transformation is more
precise than the gene gun and has been used
throughout the industry for more than 20
years. The method is also known to insert
genes with less disruption to the plant’s basic
genetic package than a gene gun. Monsanto
claims its YieldGard VT hybrids also have a
higher expression of B.t. toxin, thus resulting
in a better pest control.
